What to look for in hybrid bikes

If you’ve ever walked into a bike store and felt overwhelmed by options, we hear you. For a lot of riders, hybrid bikes are a great option, because they offer the most flexibility.

Hybrid bikes combine features from both road and mountain style bikes. So, they ride well on many different surfaces. Let’s discuss what to look for when choosing a hybrid bike. First, consider how you want to ride. Are you riding to relax, get fit, see the city, or explore the great outdoors? Do you want to haul gear on a commute or the kids on a Sunday ride? Second, consider where you ride.

Where will you be riding

Will you be riding on mostly streets and paved trails? Do you want some flexibility to go exploring on crushed limestone or light gravel? Got that perfect ride pictured in your mind? Good, let’s find which style of bike would best bring it to life. If you’re looking for a fast commute or a more fitness-oriented ride and will mostly be riding on pavement, features like a rigid fork and skinnier tires will give you a quicker, lighter ride. Looking at different models, you’ll see tires that are just a bit wider than your standard road tire. The tires and your position on the bike give you speed. But, you’re still upright enough that you can see around you in traffic or neighborhoods.

Suspension and Surface

If you’re not always sure where the day will take you and want to be prepared for any type of surface, you may be more comfortable on a bike with a front suspension fork. The suspension fork will help absorb bumps on rough roads or gravel trails, while wider, knobbier tires will give better traction. If you want a comfortable recreational ride, look for a more upright position. This geometry is more relaxed, and wider tires will help cushion any bumps in the road.

Some models even include suspension seat posts and adjustable handlebars for even more comfort hybrids come with a range of spec options to fit a range of budgets. Some models are also available as electric bikes, which makes riding a bike even more accessible (and fun!). Once you’ve chosen the type of hybrid that’s best for you, think about what accessories will make your ride your own: lights for safety, fenders for wet weather, racks and bags for commuting or shopping, and much more.

All hybrid bikes are designed to seamlessly integrate with accessories. So, you get a customized experience when seeing the world on two wheels. Of course, the best way to find which bike is right for you is to check out your local retailer, you can talk to an expert and take a test ride.

Size

Making sure that your bike is the right size is very important. It can affect how you ride the bike and you may not feel in total control or safe should the bike be too big or too small.

When it comes to hybrid bikes, they’re measured by the distance between the center of the bottom bracket and the top of the seat tube, with the sizes ranging from 14 inches to 24 inches. The length of seat post will vary depending on the seat tube length getting longer to compensate for taller cyclists. You need to check if the saddle height is right. This is a huge part in feeling comfortable and capable on a hybrid bike. Step over the bike, making sure that you’ve got a little bit of clearance.

Design

Because hybrids vary in design, each bike may be very different you should allow at least 2 inches of clearance between you and the bike so if you dismount quickly, you don’t land on the tube. I recommend measuring your inside leg and then seeing which size frame tallies with your leg measurement. So, for instance, if you have an inside leg of 26 inches to 30, you need a 14 to 15 inch frame. If your inside leg is 30 inches to 33 inches, it’s best suited to a 16 to 17 inch frame 33 to 35 measures up to an 18 to 20 inch frame.

Ape Index

Riders who have an inside leg between 35 and 36 inches need a 20 inch frame and any riders of 36 inches and above would be advised to ride a 22 inch frame. If you’re trying to decide which you need to go for and are stuck in between two different sizes of frames the deciding factor is usually your reach. To find out whether you have a longer or shorter reach, you need to work out your ‘ape index’. This means you measure your arm span and then subtract your height. If the result is a positive number, try a larger frame first.

If the result is a negative, then try a smaller frame first. Depending on the design, each hybrid could have a different reach. Some favour comfort and some favour performance, so depending on what you’re going to do with your bike, this part is down to personal preference. You may enjoy the more upright position of some of the hybrids while some of you may not Just give them a try and see what is suitable for you. Just make sure it has the correct saddle height and has a comfortable reach and stem height in the front. If you do that, you can’t go far wrong and won’t end up bending over too much.

Conclusion

A hybrid is a great choice for the more versatile cyclists out there. Just make sure you get the correct size and the experts in store will be able to advise you on this and find the right size bike for you.
